Stalking, Hunting or Culling on Kilchoan Estate is part of an overall deer management policy that runs within the whole Knoydart Peninsula & further South East into Lochaber.
The Knoydart Deer Management Group consists of 11 landowner / member bodies. The aim of the Group is to conserve and maintain an environment that will enable the members to hold & withstand a healthy deer population on their land. This includes keeping the density of deer at a level where they’re not having a detrimental impact on vegetation, flora & fauna.
Our deer numbers are counted annually and once this has been done, we work out our cull for the oncoming season.
Kilchoan Estate maintains a stalking density of 15-16 animals per 100ha.

Hind Stalking Is let out on a weekly basis, where 10 to 12 animals maybe shot.

Stalking is provided by a professional deer-stalker with over 20 years experience in the field. It’s under this supervision that guests are directed which animals should be taken out & culled from the herd. A number of animals culled within a season, consist of beasts that are too weak to make it through our wet West Coast winters.

All deer within our countryside should be considered an asset to everyone and not as a pest or vermin, if managed properly.
Deer not only have a commercial, economical value in rural areas such as Knoydart they also hold a strong tourist value, plus an ecological part to play in our landscape through light browsing or grazing.

Your stalking week on Kilchoan Estate will run Saturday-Saturday from mid August until 20th October for stags, or 21st October until 14th February for hinds. You can expect to take 4 stags or 10-12 hinds per week depending on the cull figures for the year.

The cost of this unique stalking experience including accommodation in Kilchoan Farnhouse, plus stalker and ghillie..

Kilchoan Estate was formerly part of Knoydart Estate which has been described as 'one of the wildest and finest deer forests in the whole of Scotland' (G.Kenneth Whitehead)

Traditional stalking methods are still in use on Knoydart. At the end of your day, once the beast has been dragged off the hill (bring a drag rope!!)and if the terrain is inaccessible by quad or jeep, the garron ponies will be loaded up ready to head back to the larder, unless your day is taking place on the South Easterly part of the estate which is reached by boat.
